Sustainable Design & Practices

At Lost Horizon Texas we employ a variety of sustainable and off-grid practices to provide the three basics to modern life.

Our water comes from rain that we triple filter and UV sterilize. We feel that it’s a notable difference from city water – one that can be tasted and felt.

In part, our electricity comes from solar including open-source software and hardware.

Our waste treatment employs multi-stage living-aerobic composting and graywater recycling. The gray water helps to nourish plant life on the property. The Satao and Hideout have normal flush toilets – you never have to think about the system.

We employ recycled and up-cycled materials where it makes functional sense and is economically feasible. The Satao, for example, uses locally sourced cedar in the deck posts and light fixtures. The front French door and hardware, sourced from a 100-year-old farmhouse in Lampasas, add to the story and sense of the place. Additionally, the beautiful glass and metal work in the Hideout was all done onsite, by the artist. The Hideout walls are constructed of sustainably sourced hardwood.
